Oak Ridge Schools is proud to be a top public school system in Tennessee that successfully prepares students for college, career, and life success. The school system has had a long history of academic excellence and, despite the continued interruptions to education caused by the pandemic, our students continue to improve and performed above the state average and pre-pandemic years.
Starting with celebrations, third and fourth grades literacy and math saw significant growth in student proficiency. English Language Arts (ELA) proficiency scores improved from 39% to 47%, outperforming the state average of 38% proficient. Elementary math proficiency improved from 44% to 56%, outscoring the state average of 37% proficient.
Students taking U.S. history continue to outperform the state average (38%) and grew 10 percentage points (61%) in comparison to the 2021 school year data. Oak Ridge Schools’ results surpassed the state’s results in grade bands 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12 English Language Arts, math, social studies and science.
Oak Ridge Schools successfully managed to test 98% of students on the State of Tennessee TNReady and End of Course (EOC) exams during the Spring testing window. Additionally, the overall average composite score on ACT held at an average of 21. While math performance has surpassed pandemic achievement levels, it will continue to be an area of focus for improvement in the 2022-23 school year.
Oak Ridge Schools will continue to provide extended learning opportunities during the upcoming school year. Summer school was offered for students in grades 1-12 during the summers of 2021 and 2022 and will continue for another year. Additionally, schools will provide support for students through after-school tutoring and intersession programs throughout this school year. We remain focused on excellence and use the Oak Ridge Schools’ Portrait of a Graduate to improve not only in academics, but career exploration, 21st century skills, and social-emotional learning. Oak Ridge Schools would like to acknowledge the great support that we receive from the Oak Ridge community. With our continued emphasis on excellent public education, we know that we will have a great 2022-2023 school year.
