The Tennessee School Boards Association (TSBA) announced Lily Shelton, a senior at Oak Ridge High School, as its Statewide Student Achievement Award Winner. Shelton was recognized at TSBA’s Annual Convention in Nashville and was joined by her family, Oak Ridge Schools senior leadership and Board of Education Members.
The Student Achievement Award is given annually to a student who has achieved distinction in the areas of academics, community leadership, and engagement as part of its Student Recognition Award program. Students must previously be chosen as their TSBA Regional Student Achievement Award winner to be eligible to be recognized as the state level. Lily Shelton has maintained a 4.0 GPA and is the current president of Interact Club. The senior is also a member of ORHS Student Council, the National Honor Society and Wildcats for Change, which aims to improve the culture and climate of Oak Ridge High School. Additionally, Shelton is a member of the Youth Advisory Board, Youth Leadership Oak Ridge and the varsity tennis team.
“I am so proud of Lily and her commitment to making Oak Ridge High School a better place for all students,” said Dr. Bruce Borchers, Superintendent of Oak Ridge Schools. “Her impressive resume of extracurricular activities is staggering when you realize she manages it all while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. She is a great example of the impact our students can have on the world around them and a wonderful representation of Oak Ridge students statewide.”
In total, there are nine regional winners that Lily competed against for the statewide award. Previously, Shelton was selected among 23 districts in the East Region to become East Regional Student Achievement honoree, making her eligible for the statewide award. As part of this recognition, Lily received a $2,000 scholarship from TSBA, a $2,200 scholarship from TSBA’s Silver Business Affiliate, Energy Systems Group, and a plaque in recognition of her outstanding achievements.
