Below are short summaries of Dusti Bowling’s novels:
The Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus: Aven Green was born with no arms. When her parents take a job running a rundown western theme park in Arizona, she has to start over at a new school and community, not an easy task for someone without arms. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she bonds with Connor, who also has a disability. They discover a room at Stagecoach Pass that holds bigger secrets than Aven ever could have imagined. The sequel is Momentous Events in the Life of a Cactus. Mrs. Bowling has also written a series of early chapter books about Aven.
The Canyon’s Edge: A year after her mother’s tragic death, Nora and her father experience another traumatic event when they are caught in a flash flood while hiking in a slot canyon in the Arizona desert. This adventure novel is mostly written in verse and also touches upon issues of mental health.
Across the Desert: After a friend crashes a ultra-lite plane in the desert, Jolene tries to rescue her with a help of a new friend and her mapmaking skills.
24 Hours in Nowhere: Desperate to raise enough money to buy a dirt bike before the biggest race of the year, Gus and three of his friends search for gold in the abandoned and possibly haunted Dead Frenchman’s Mine.
