The Secret City Wildbots FIRST Robotics team watched the Southern Appalachian Regional Awards ceremony together in the Amphitheater at ORHS on May 11. The team is once again bringing home four awards and blue banners.
For the 2nd straight year, Secret City Wildbots are bringing home the prestigious Chairman’s Finalist award for the Southern Appalachian Region. The judges lauded the team’s lab-in-a-box program with Roane State Foundation that puts STEM kits in the hands of teachers and students at rural schools in the Appalachian region and the numerous outreach and mentor opportunities for local elementary and middle schools. The team was named regional finalists for skills competition submissions.
The Wildbots mentor, Dr. Luke Scime, who works with the controls and programming teams, became the second Wildbots mentor in ten years to earn the Woodie Flowers Regional Finalist award. Junior Alex Shanafield became the fifth Wildbot student in 10 years to earn the Regional Dean’s List Finalist award. Alex will now compete with the other Dean’s List Finalists from each region for the Dean’s List Award, and the team will compete with other Chairman’s Award finalists from each region for the 2021 Chairman’s Award. These awards will be given later this year.
